The film will be directed by Guy Ritchie, written by John August and Ritchie, and will be produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Warner Bros. It will be the first live action Disney film since A Beautiful Mind in 2002, and is planned to be released in the United States on May 24, 2019. A follow-up titled Aladdin and the King of Thieves is in development, with Ritchie and August reprising their writing and directing roles. Filming began on February 20, 2018, in Dubai. Principal photography in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates began on March 5, 2018, with post-production on the film completed on October 24, 2019. The film will be released on May 24, 2019. John August returns to the screenwriting role he had previously performed with Ritchie on 2004's sci-fi comedy the Aladdin and the King of Thieves. After an initial script treatment from August, Ritchie became the film's writer, while also directing the film. Casting was announced in February 2018. Genie cast member Mena Massoud was announced as the film's lead on May 2, 2018. The character was written into the film as a sequel to the original film's origin, which sees him trapped under the lamp and reluctant to venture into the real world. Marwan Kenzari and Naomi Scott were cast in May 2018. That same month, Naomi Scott said that she had been reading the script for months prior to joining the film. In April 2019, Navid Negahban and Will Smith were cast in supporting roles. On October 17, 2019, Mena Massoud, Will Smith, and Navid Negahban made their first official appearance during a world premiere event at Disney's El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. The film, which had been rumored to have been moved to New York City for filming, was instead filmed in and around Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
